10 places you have to visit before you die (part 1)

Ok, bit of a morbid heading, I know. But hey, this post will try and expose some of the most extraordinary locations on the planet and hopefully convince you to cross them off your list.

It’s easy to book a cheap flight and package holiday to Thailand or Croatia, and it’s fun, no doubt. The world is such a beautiful place and if you blink too long you may miss the chance to visit its many hidden gems, or in some cases, not so well hidden ones. Again this article is based on my opinion, having been lucky enough to have traveled to a fair (but still pretty insignificant) portion of the world these are my all time top picks. Some may surprise you.

Krakow, Poland

I sense your surprise. Poland? I have to admit this one was a real underdog on this list. Due to its historical importance and general vibe this one had to be on the list. Located in South western Poland Krakow is home to some of the darkest but most inspiring history. Depicting a tragic story of Nazi brutality mixed in with resistance from brave Jewish men and women, Krakow is home to sites like Schindler’s Enamel factory, Auschwitz Birkenau and the Ghetto. Steeped in historical importance, Krakow also has significant churches like St Marys Basilica and Synagogues, along with the Wawel castle atop a prominent hill in the centre of town. A really worthy and quite cheap place to go.

How to get there?

Head over to STA to get hold of some cheap flights (direct from £30 depending on season) or bus it, although this can take a while!

Bergen, Norway

This made it onto the list based on the assumption that you’ll be taking the infamous Oslo- Bergen trainline. The line brags about being the highest rising line in Europe, and genuinely feels like you’re being transported through several seasons all within the space of a few hours. This city based in the valley of two mountain ranges is oddly efficient, with all you’d need located in a compact city centre. The views and surrounding landscapes are an important factor as to why Bergen makes it onto the list.

The stunning views of various mountain ranges, fjords and with a well connected metropolitan city Bergen boasts a plethora of great activities. Hike the Viden trail between Mount Ulriken and Mount Floyen direct from the Bergen city centre or take the train or various buses to nearby Fjords.

Seattle, USA

The ultimate chill out spot. Seattle is located in the North West of the US and is easily accessible from Canada and surrounding areas. Up on the horizon you’ll see a mountain range, just to the side a perfect sunset. Seattle, the home of the progressive, and the birthplace of Starbucks. Make sure to use the efficient monorail to get to the Space Needle for truly astounding views of the city and surrounding beautiful landscape. This made it onto the list for it’s unique metropolitan take on a chilled cityvibe.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

Imagine a picture perfect nordic viking fishing village. Something that might be better placed in a land far far away in another kingdom. Lofoten is genuinely one of the most surreal experiences i’ve ever had traveling. After taking a 20 hour train, changing in Trondheim, and then a 3.5 hour ferry, it better be good, and oh boy it is.rorbuer-lofoten-islands-norway

Situated right in the North of Norway, in the Arctic circle Lofoten is a mountainous set of ‘Islands’ although I use the term loosely considering it’s pretty much connected to the rest of Norway. The dark red fishing log cabins lay precariously perched on the waterfront, these double up as hotels. The one road is stretched through various villages and under mountains. Buses aren’t really a thing so bicycles have to do.

Takayama, Japan

A perfect Japanese city enclaved in the Japanese Alps, and virtually unspoilt by modern day culture. A blend of mountain air, perfect temples and traditional old stye japanese housing makes Takayama a truly special experience. Away from the hectic hustle and bustle of Nagoya and Tokyo Takayama almost feels like it exists in its own little bubble. Hop on a bus to head into the heart of the mountains where you may encounter various monkeys running across the road or head out to the infamous Hida folk Village, where ancient houses lay preserved. A truly special city situated at the heart of the Japanese Alps.
